Evidently, Klondike is a cub scout event day, in which cub scouts showcase their abilities as an outdoors man. Youngest has his Klondike this weekend. In preparation, the den master decided to do a practice run at his house this past Monday.
In the 35 degree weather.
For four hours.
The practice was to give the kids a run through of what is expected, and to ensure that all the supplies
There are a number of stations, everything from fire building, campsite set up, to cooking. There is also knot tying and citizenship. During the citizenship unit, they are asked questions about the flag, and our government. Random questions like...
Den Master: "Who is the president?"
Scout: "Obama"
DM: "Who is looking to run against the president?"
Random Scouts: "Romney, Newt, Ron Paul"
DM: "Who's the front runner right now?"
Youngest: "Mitt Romney"
DM: "If something happens to the president, who's in charge?"
Scout: "The vice president"
DM: "If something happens to the Vice President, then who's in charge?"
Scouts: "The Governor? The Army? "
DM: "No. Guys it's the Speaker of the House"
DM: "Okay, and who is that?"
Scout: "My Mom"
Laughter erupts.
DM: "We need a den name and flag."
Scout: "The Purple Tacos!"
DM: "Really?"
Scout: "Yes!!!"
DM: "No. Come on, last year you guys made me go the whole day as the Pink Sparkly Flamingos."
Scout: "The Pats."
Scout: "The Pink Turtles"
Scout: "The Flying Guppies!"
DM: "How about something like the Rattlesnakes?"
Scout: "The FLAMING Rattlesnakes!!!!"
The rest of the day went along in this fashion until we could no longer feel our finger tips. In the end, I was assigned to getting sand for the fire building station, along with all the food for the cooking unit (as it is my son with the allergies) and somewhere along the lines I volunteered to fix the American flag that they were going to use, as well as create the den flag.
It's not my best work, but all things considered (like four days notice) it will do.
Especially because it's supposed to be 36 degrees and rainy all day.
Perhaps we should have gone with the Soggy Rattlesnakes.
At 35 degrees the snake aint the only thing I would be burning for heat.
ReplyDeleteYou are a good mom! Your boys are lucky to have you. I liked the Speaker of the house response! Priceless..
ReplyDeleteKudos to you! I'd have high- tailed it to my car to sit on my heated seats and watched from a distance. ;0)
ReplyDeleteOutstanding job on that flag Julianna.
(((hugs)))Pat
My little guy is only a wolf cub, so we have a ways to go, but why don't they do this in March when it's chilly, but not so much?
ReplyDeleteThe idea of Klondike is that it's a cold weather thing... IE: the dog sled, the cold weather stations, etc. I've been told it's a great time, provided it's not during a blizzard.
DeleteKlondike is for Webelos 1 and 2, so you have 2 years I think to wait.
I must say, you did a better job with a 4 day notice than I would have with a 4 month notice. I couldn't have made that.
ReplyDeleteYour tag "How do I get myself into these things?!" is the best part!! I feel that way about raising kids! It was always like a "Oh crap, I'm pregnant?! How do I get myself into these things?!"
ReplyDeleteOH... I know how I get myself into these things... open mouth, insert foot. :)
DeleteYou are awesome! There's no way I could have come up with and MADE a flag like that. I've debated putting my son into boy scouts recently, so it's good to hear some of the stuff I'd have to look forward to.
ReplyDeleteHope you guys have a great time out there.. and try to stay dry!
It's really been a great experience so far. But my advice is not to wait. Youngest is already a Webelo, so he only has two years to prepare for boy scouts. It's a lot to learn. If they start as wolfs, or bears, they have longer to learn their stuff.
DeleteThat flag is awesome! I hope your boys appreciate you!
ReplyDeleteThe "Speaker of the House" comment & the rattlesnake flag convinced the entire panel of judges (me).
ReplyDeleteCheck your email--the coveted (?) "fishducky approved" button is on its way!
That flag is off the hook. Nicely done Momma! :) And I whole heartedly approve of the name, but did have a giggle at the other choices. Boys.
ReplyDeleteI love that you are the Speaker of the House. Cracked me up! You are a good mom to do this stuff and I love that flag. It's way kewl!
ReplyDeleteYou are one rockin flaming rattlesnake mom! And that troop sounds like a lot of fun.
ReplyDeletemaybe all those flames coming from the snakes will keep them warm....
ReplyDeleteLove the flag! You did a great job on it!
ReplyDeleteI'm picturing a flag with purple tacos. What fun imaginations they have! :)
That is awesome! I am the Speaker of our house too and I believe I outrank the president there too. LOL!
ReplyDeleteIt's so nice of you to make that flag. You did a very good job. I would not stand outside in the cold all that time. I am a wimp and couldn't take it.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
AWESOME. You win!
ReplyDeleteUPDATE:
ReplyDeleteIt's 10pm. No word on weather it's cancelled or not. Here's the thing... it's supposed to snow 5-8 inches, all between 11 and 2 pm. We are in the State Forest.
700 of us.
I'm thinking my car will make it in, but not out, since it can't handle three inches of snow.
Here's hoping some of the eagle scout and boy scout helpers have brushed up on their survival skills.
Pretty sure cub scouts here would have no idea what to do with snow except perhaps throw it at each other.
ReplyDeleteWhen I read 35 deg I thought nice day and then I remembered it was in Fahrenheit. Converting it I realised that that is less than 2 deg C. OMG that is crazy cold. You are going to have cub scout popsicles
THEY will be moving around. The parents will not. I'm just hoping to be able to feel my toes at the end... and that the car doesn't get stuck in the snow. Only good news, it would only take about 3 hours to walk home if we absolutely had to...

ReplyDeleteMy New Blog – “Lizard Happy”
Already linked... lovin' it! :)
DeleteMy ex was our den leader. My son made it all the way to Eagle Scout (so proud). We earned the polar bear award twice in a three day camping trip (no - and I mean NO - facilities - out in the middle to the freaking woods) in Louisiana, no less. Yes, it does occasionally get cold here.
ReplyDeleteGood times, great memories. I no longer have to sleep on the cold hard ground ever again.
Treasure this. It goes so fast and really? A great time was had by all (even when we slid down an embankment because the stupid thing gave way due to all the rain and we returned to camp shoeless and covered in mud - good times.).
Love the flag! I can't sew a stitch to save my life. Which is why the patches never make it onto my son's scout shirts.
ReplyDeleteWOO!! Love the banner you made! I love that the scouts had to have an adjective attached to the name.....they so should have gone with the purple tacos.
